New Spin on some Old Ideas: Solar-powered Benches with Zinc-bromide Batteries

Admittedly, we are suckers for technology that is "off grid". What's better than an outdoor solar-powered bench with lights. Here is a bit of information from manmonthly.com.au
Australian battery innovator Gelion Technologies has delivered a roll-out of its solar-powered benches at the University of Sydney, taking its battery technology to the pre-market stage.
The Endure batteries that power the off-grid smart benches will be the first commercial installation for the company, which was spun-out from the University of Sydney by founder and chemist, Professor Thomas Maschmeyer.
::
The Endure zinc-bromide batteries are optimised for stationary energy storage and could be used to power a range of off- or on-grid applications in the industrial, commercial, agricultural and residential sectors. They are especially suited to hot and remote environments given their high-temperature capability and low-fade characteristics, even if completely charged and discharged on a daily basis.
::
Gelion's robust and safe chemistry makes the expensive and complex auxiliary systems typically associated with other battery types unnecessary. As the Endure battery technology does not require air-conditioning, fire suppression or acid catchment areas, the overall costs and difficulty of the battery installation are substantially reduced.
The Endure battery can be transported and stored with zero voltage, a significant advantage for logistics, safety and cost. The gel used in the Gelion platform has fire-retardant properties, making the batteries resistant to overheating and exploding and are therefore ideally suited for tough and remote environments, for example in off-grid and agricultural markets.

POTUS Candidate Biden Clarifies his Position on a Green Future: Banning fossil fuels in 10 years 'not possible', talks solar power and batteries

 In longer article with much detail from the Thurday debate, Joe Biden was noted as giving more details - including the use of solar power and emerging battery technology, we quote

Building out transmission infrastructure is something Biden rarely, if ever, mentions on the campaign trail. It was one of several lengthy answers where the former vice president sought to demonstrate policy depth, as he did on education, tax policy, and even battery storage.

"The battery technology's increasing significantly so you're going to be able to have, for example, solar on your home and a battery the size," making a large box shape with his hands, "in your basement so when the sun doesn't shine for five days, you still have enough energy," Biden said.

::

"The difference between me and the new green deal is they say, automatically, by 2030 we're going to be carbon free. Not possible," Biden said.

The Solyndra effect.

Solyndra was a memetic weapon. It's intent was to protect big oil and gas companies and keep us from forward progress.  It's amazing that cheap energy is here and we can't make forward progress on it.

So let me explain how this works.

We recently had a Green Technology Bubble.  It was getting hyped in the press and everyone thought it was where things were heading. Or so it seemed.   It's been several times now in my life I've watched everyone jump on to the Solar/Green bandwagon only to have the wheels fall off and everyone abandons it in a hurry.

There were and still are a number of good technologies and companies, but it's just not happening.
There are several factors, Solyndra and Enron being a large part of this.

See with a bubble comes a flood of VC and Speculator money.  As it is with any Gold rush, there are also no shortage of con-artists and scammers, plying there trade, and you also have many clueless idiots that just show up to the party hoping to figure it out and get in the game.

The amount of financing is finite and will only go so far till there are some successes and failures before more arrives. Who get's the money from VC, Federal and State Grants, private investors? Usually not the engineers and scientists who lack the slick marketing skills of Madison avenue.  It's people who already have money, or their kids just graduated from some top university.  Those are usually first in line.

Now the easiest way to ensure a Green Technology bubble crashes and burns is to load the deck where all the really big big Mind boggling big funded start-up are run by people who have no intention of ever seeing Solar technology ever see the light of day.  And you take everyone's money and run it in to the ground at full speed.  This will burn every investors and make it nearly impossible for every little inventor with the real stuff from getting anywhere.

Meanwhile you have the California state government saying they are for solar then sabotage and strangle in bureaucratic red tape every solar plant and come just shy of outlawing solar panels on people root tops.

Now that they have killed this bubble and scared off any investment opportunity, you have then using the Solyndra to taint other companies that have nothing to do with it.

See the article Below.  Bloom Energy isn't even Green energy.  Fuel Cells could be but the ones they are equating with Solyndra are using Methane Natural Gas, a Hydrocarbon fossil fuel.

The Bloom energy devices are only somewhat less polluting, but make a lot of sense from a technology point of view as if the electrical grid fails the City Gas lines would most likely be working (as least outside of earthquake country).  They provide a clean, lower maintenance version of a Back Up Generator for Data Centers, and little more.

Washington Times: NICHOLS & DRIESSEN: Delaware’s very own Solyndra?

From an E-mail from cfact.org
CFACT's Driessen: "Another Solyndra" in Delaware
CFACT senior policy advisor Paul Driessen and independent financial consultant John Nichols called attention to an attempt by California-based Bloom Energy to get the State of Delaware to subsidize the manufacture of supersized fuel cells and to replace natural gas and coal-fired power plants for electricity generation (.Delaware.s very own Solyndra," Washington Times, 9-23-11).

Supported by Gov. Jack Markell and other politicians, Bloom is demanding $600,000,000 to $775,000,000 in tariffs over 20 years . plus $16,000,000 in startup costs, plus additional millions from the U.S. Department of Energy . all risk-free and guaranteed, regardless of whether the fuel cells ever generate a kilowatt of electricity. The revelations come on the heels of reports that the bankrupt Solyndra counts among its creditors the California Democratic Party!

Solar is the “Fastest Growing Industry in America”

thinkprogress.org
Stephen Lacey: The U.S. solar industry grew 102% last year and is on track to grow another 100% this year. What other industry doubled its growth during one of the worst economic periods in our history? The GOP has been using the Solyndra debacle to talk about “pet alternative energy.” This nonsens...

I'm thrilled that, at a time that US growth is around zero, solar grew 102% last year and is projected to grow 100% this year. Ray Kurzweil totally nailed this one as a futurist: he emphasized that this would happen more than anyone else I can recall. I think this is the best economic news to come out of the US this year, other than Apple's climb to "world's most valuable company".
John L. Sokol Amazing since the several largest Billion Dollar funded Solar companies around Silicon Valley went belly up this year. What dipstick are the Government and VC funding? It's my true believe that they are only funding cronies to steal solar funding rather then funding real start ups. This is so they can claim to back solar while at the same time, blocking solar farms, and being in Big Oil's back pocket. The reality is Solar is not quite Morse law, but still exponentially improving, as is battery and capacitor storage technologies and must at some point soon become cheaper then anything else.

Solar Company Folds After $0.5B In Subsidies

From Slashdot:
"Solyndra, a Silicon Valley solar energy firm, subsidized to the tune of $500 million and held as a 'gleaming example of green technology,' announced bankruptcy yesterday. 1,100 employees fired."

If you can't make a self sustaining company after burning through $500 Million you deserve prison time.

Nuclear Energy Now More Expensive Than Solar

From Slashdot:

"According to an article on the New York Times, a historical cross-over has occurred because of the declining costs of solar vs. the increasing costs of nuclear energy: solar, hardly the cheapest of renewable technologies, is now cheaper than nuclear, at around 16 cents per kilowatt hour. Furthermore, the NY Times reports that financial markets will not finance the construction of nuclear power plants unless the risk of default (which is historically as high as 50 percent for the nuclear industry) is externalized to someone else through federal loan guarantees or ratepayer funding. The bottom line seems to be that nuclear is simply not competitive, and the push from the US government to subsidize it seems to be forcing the wrong choice on the market."

Electric companies screw over people that converted to Solar.

A number of utility companies are changing to new digital meters that don't allow people who generate power to get credit for power put back in to the grid.

See story:

Man goes green, now sees red

May 24: A Texas man's solar upgrades actually increase his power bill. He blames the electric company's new meter. KXAS reporter Ken Kalthoff has the story.
